Former European Le Mans Series LMP3 Champion Wayne Boyd is teaming up with 2021 MLMC Champions winning team Nielsen Racing to try and add another title to his impressive racing CV.
The 33-year-old Northern Irishman will team up with 2021 MLMC LMP3 Champion Tony Wells, with Boyd looking to add the Michelin Le Mans Cup LMP3 title to the ELMS and Asian Le Mans Series crowns he won in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
After several years with United Autosports, Boyd joins Nielsen Racing for his debut season with the British team. So what is he looking forward to the most about working with Nielsen Racing over the coming season? “There’s quite a few reasons why I’m looking forward to my debut season with Nielsen,” Wayne Boyd said. “From racing against them for several seasons, I know they put out a super quick, reliable car and always in the championship hunt so I’m excited to get the season going and get some laps under my belt.
“Another reason is I know quite a few people in the team from over the years, so I know I’ll be comfortable in my new environment from the get-go.”
Two former LMP3 champions in the same car is a formidable combination but how are the two drivers gelling as a team? “Tony and I have never raced together but we’ve certainly crossed paths a lot over the last few years, and we get on well. He’s got seriously strong pace and a fierce competitor so as a line up I’m quietly confident we’ll be in the hunt.”
So, what about the 2024 LMP3 class? “Le Mans cup is always crazy competitive, and the racing is so close which I really enjoy,” Boyd said. “I know there will be other strong line ups, but without being arrogant it’s not something I look at, I always concentrate on what we’re doing and keep pushing to get the most from our package.”
Mugello joins the MLMC calendar for the first time this season. What does Wayne Boyd think of the track? “I’ve never raced at Mugello before, but I did a test there a few years ago. It’s such a good track, so fast and flowing, a great addition to the calendar. I’m sure the racing will be epic there too with the long front straight.”
With just two months before the first race in Barcelona, will they be ready? “Preparations are going well. Training hard at home and I know the team are working hard make sure we have the best possible chance to start our championship campaign!”
