Reigning Michelin Le Mans Cup Team Champions GMB Motorsport has secured the services of 2020 FIA World GTE Champion and Aston Martin Racing works driver Nicki Thiim for the team’s upcoming debut season in the European Le Mans Series alongside fellow Danes Gustav Birch and Jens Reno Møller.
The newly appointed Head of Sport at GMB Motorsport, Henrik Lundgaard, is extremely pleased that the agreement with AMR has come about and looks forward to the unique opportunity it is for the team:
"Nicki is without a doubt one of Denmark's most successful and experienced drivers, and it is a huge scoop for us to be able to associate a talent of this calibre. He has a long list of great titles under his belt, and we hope that he can expand his trophy cabinet with us when we hopefully get closer to the title fight in this year's ELMS. In addition to increasing our chances of victory, Nicki will be able to pour out his experience to our young team, who will be trying their hand at the GTE class for the first time.
33-year-old Nicki Thiim will be behind the wheel of the team's new Aston Martin Vantage GTE for the six 4-hour races that are part of the ELMS, starting with the race in Barcelona on April 23.
Thiim takes over from the Danish TCR champion Kasper H. Jensen, who will instead focus on the domestic events, where he has the opportunity to pick up his seventh championship this year, which will make him the most winning driver of all time in the series.
The other two drivers for GMB Motorsport will be MLMC race winners Gustav Birch and Jens Reno Møller, who will benefit from the massive experience Nicki has gained after 10 years as a works driver for Aston Martin Racing.
Nicki Thiim will be unable to compete for GMB Motorsport at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as he will be racing for FIA WEC team Northwest AMR at the 100thanniversary event. His place in the GMB Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage will be taken by Thiim’s fellow World Champion, and reigning 24 Hours of Le Mans LMGTE AM winner, Marco Sørensen.
