Road To Le Mans: the drivers’ reactions
23/08/2021

Maurice Smith – n°69 Cool Racing Ligier JS P320 (3rd LMP3- Race 1)

“It’s a pleasure to race on this amazing circuit once again with COOL Racing. Driving on the Circuit de la Sarthe is always an emotional experience and it’s a great honour for me to be back here. I’m very proud that Matt (Bell) and I were able to finish third in Race 1 and make another trip to the Road to Le Mans podium following our two top three finishes last year. Unfortunately, the second race was tough, we recovered well but didn’t get the result we wanted in the end. Thanks to the team for their incredible work this weekend and I’m looking forward to being back on track at Spa next month.”

Mike Benham – n°14 RLR MSport Ligier JS P320 (3rd LMP3 – Race 2)

“Overall, it was a positive weekend. We had some bad luck in the Pro Qualifying-Practice session and that put us in a bad position for the start of race one, which ended prematurely with a puncture anyway.

“We knew we had the pace to challenge for the podium and I secretly thought, because Malthe (Jakobsen) hadn’t had a chance to race on Thursday he would probably set the world alight, which is exactly what he did. I’m delighted, as this is my fourth podium on the Saturday at Le Mans and it’s nice to keep that run going, but also because I got to stand up on that famous rostrum with Malthe Jakobsen who I’m sure will get many, many more podiums and victories in the 24 Hours itself.”

Charles Weerts – n°72 Team WRT Audi R8 LMS (3rd GT3 – Race 2)

“It was an amazing weekend, less stressful than usual. It was nice discovering the track and living the atmosphere, now I understand why Le Mans is Le Mans. The car was quick, we had a good potential. In Race 1, I took the lead in the second corner, but unfortunately, the safety-car ruined our efforts, we still could take P7. In Race 2, after a great qualifying from Jean-Denis, we kept with the front-runners and in my stint, I could recover up to 3rd, very close to the second. Now, I can enjoy the 24 Hours as a spectator and cheer for Team WRT, which is doing a fantastic job.”

John Schauerman – n°23 United Autosports Ligier JS P320

“It is always very cool to drive the Le Mans track. Our first race was a little disappointing, but Duncan did a really great job in the car. I really enjoyed the start of the second race, but a puncture unfortunately slowed us down. It was a fun weekend and I love driving here.”
