Who Will Win the GT3 Drivers Title?

While the Michelin Le Mans Cup Teams title was decided in favour of the no8 Iron Lynx Ferrari at Spa-Francorchamps last month, the drivers title is still up for grabs in the final race of the season in Portugal on Sunday 24 October.

There is also a distinct possibility that the title will go to a driver who doesn’t drive for the championship winning team, the first time this has happened since the inaugural season in 2016 when TF Sport won the team title and Aleksey Basov and Viktor Shaitar (SMP Racing) took the drivers crown.

With Iron Lynx swapping their driver line up in the no8 Ferrari during the season, the current championship leader is Nicolas Leutwiler in the no2 Pzoberer Zürichsee by TFT Porsche.

The Swiss driver is currently leading with 89 points, 15 ahead of his teammate Julien Andlauer, who is on 74 points after missing the race at Paul Ricard, where Leutwiler finished third alongside Wolf Henzler. Together, the Franco-Swiss duo have taken two wins in Barcelona and in Race 2 at Road To Le Mans and a further podium at Spa-Francorchamps last month.

There are two drivers who are mathematically in contention for the drivers’ crown. Paolo Ruberti is 18 points behind Nicolas Leutwiler, with the Italian scoring two wins and a second-place finish in his three races in the no8 Iron Lynx Ferrari.

Doriane Pin is 4 points behind her Iron Lynx teammate on 67 points after finishing on the podium in each of the five races she has started in 2021, including three second place finishes at Paul Ricard, Monza and in Race 1 at Road To Le Mans.

With an 18-point advantage, Nicolas Leutwiler must finish at least 5th in the final race at Portimão to be sure of winning the 2021 title.
