QUALIFYING: Wells Claims LMP3 Pole for Nielsen Racing at Spa

2021 MLMC Champion Tony Wells claimed his first Michelin Le Mans Cup pole position for five years with a 2m13.178 lap in a red flagged interrupted session.

The session was halted to recover the stranded no15 Inter Europol Competition Ligier of Christian Short from the gravel at Les Fagnes.The session resumed with the no7 Ligier at the top of the timing screens.

Wells posted faster times, with his best coming at the chequered flag.The 2m13.178 lap was just 0.035s ahead of the second placed car, the no67 Haegeli by T2 Racing Duqueine of Pieder Decurtins, the Swiss driver also setting his best time as the chequered flag was waved.

The no97 COOL Racing Ligier of Luis Sanjuan and the no68 M Racing Ligier of Erwin Creed will start from the second row of the grid for this afternoon’s 110-minute race.

GT3 Pole Secured by Iron Lynx

Hiroshi Hamaguchi claimed his and Iron Lynx’s second pole of the 2023 Michelin Le Mans Cup when he dominated a red flagged interrupted GT3 qualifying session.

Qualifying was halted after less than two minutes when the no83 AF Corse Ferrari of Charles-Henri Samani spun off at Les Combes, the French driver getting going again, and the no86 HCR with CaffeineSix Porsche of Tim Creswick hitting the barrier at the exit of Bruxelles.The Porsche needed to be recovered but Creswick was unharmed in the incident.

The session resumed but the no10 Racing Spirit of Leman Aston Martin failed to start, leaving championship leader Arnold Robin stranded with the rest of the field rejoining the track.

The no63 Iron Lynx Lamborghini set the initial pole position, with Hamaguchi improving the time to 2m18.160, 0.997s faster than the next car, the no64 Team Parker Racing Porsche of Alex Martin.The no55 GMB Motorsport Honda NSX and the no19 Leipert Motorsport Lamborghini finished the session were 3rdand 4thfastest respectively.

Arnold Robin managed to rejoin the session but with only 45 seconds left on the clock the French driver was unable to set a time and will start the race at the back of the grid with the no86 HCR with CaffeineSix Porsche.

The race at Spa-Francorchamps is due to begin at 16h05 this afternoon.
