Nicolas Maulini secured Cool Racing’s first pole position of the season with a flying last lap around the 7km Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the no37 Ligier JS P320-Nissan.
The Swiss driver was on pole position for most of the 15-minute session but faced strong challenges from the no21 Muehlner Motorsport Duqueine M30-D08-Nissan of Moritz Kranz and the no26 Graff Ligier of Rory Penttinen.
Maulini had his time deleted on his third lap when he ran wide at Raidillon testing the limits of grip. He learned his lesson and posted several fastest laps until he finished with a 2m14.410 at the chequered flag, half a second ahead of Moritz Kranz in the no21 Muehlner Motorsport Duqueine. Nicolas Melin posted his fastest lap of the session at the chequered flag to secure the third spot on the grid in the no11 Racing Experience Duqueine with a 2m16.366, just ahead of Jean Glorieux in the no3 DKR Engineering Duqueine.
Mastronardi Scores Second GT3 Pole of 2020 Season
Rino Mastronardi took his second pole position in a row in the no8 Iron Lynx Ferrari 488 GT3. He lapped the 7km Spa-Francorchamps circuit in 2m22.882, over a second ahead of the no74 Kessel Racing Ferrari of Michael Broniszewski.
The Polish driver was pushing hard to try and close the gap to his Italian rival but had several laps deleted due to going beyond track limits.
The no77 Iron Lynx Ferrari of Claudio Schiavoni was third fastest at the chequered flag with a 2m25.825 lap at the end of 15-minute session.
Round 2 of the 2020 Michelin Le Mans Cup will take place at 15h55 this afternoon at Spa-Francorchamps with the race live and uninterrupted on the official website.
